Abstract

Student engagement is emerging as one of the strong challenges for university teachers. Digital natives not only stand out from their predecessors because of their technology suaveness but also due to their disenchantment with the traditional student engagement. The irony of Digital immigrants teaching Digital natives highlights the sauveness of them in usage of skill and aptitude in technology but also focuses and delineates their peculiar perspective, needs and demands. It widens the bridge of effective student engagement. The time demands to have collaborative and innovative engagements suiting to the purpose of these new-millennials. This inference is the basis of usage of web 2.0 as a learning-teaching tool. The technology-driven learning has actually changed the dynamics of learning acquisition. It has facilitated the creation of learning spaces 'for learners' and 'by learners'. It has also taken out the learning out of the confined of 'mortar and brick' classrooms to that of 'mortar and clicks'. This has helped them in acquiring learning at their own pace, space and time. Keeping all this in mind, a pilot project was launched for a course where the use of hypermedia was used. This paper encompasses insights from this pilot project involving 441 undergraduate students of an Engineering college. Blogging was chosen as the engagement tool. The paper will discuss the methodology and the results from the work. The paper intends to promote the blogging as successful and innovative tool for learning and students engagement.

Abstract

Higher education scenario is undergoing a massive transformation, triggered by host of events. The efforts are on to recalibrate Higher Education all over the world. Paradigm shift is from teaching to learning. Realization of learning as a conscious process and importance of formal and informal learning spaces is gathering pace. It has been felt that need is to make learning tangible and measurable. Defining outcome of the courses and programmes are the part of Outcome Based Education, but formal and core courses target cognitive and psychomotor domain in Engineering curriculum but affective domain still remains untouched. The affective domains can be taught and learned through informal learnings. This paper will throw light upon the efforts of defining the co-curricular activities which, inculcates affective domain in a more robust manner. The precise and tangible outcome in the activities mostly related with affective domain are termed as Activity Learning Outcome (ALOs). The activities which can be the part of teaching - learning methodology like blogging and virtual labs or cooperative teaching and industrial visits, have well-articulated outcomes in sync with Bloom's Taxonomy. The paper will discuss the desired commonalities and its manifestation in the Activity learning outcomes (ALOs) for education giving impetus to systemic or holistic thinking, the assimilation of different perspectives, skills such as critical thinking, interpersonal relations and communication, and finally different attitudes and values.

Abstract

Mark Twain advice regarding not letting school interfering the education seems to be the order of the day. The students sitting in our classrooms are too different and demanding than previousdecades. These millennials demand life skills, real-life experiences, application oriented-ness and engagement that can help them in this very dynamic and robust workplace. The kerfuffle it has created in higher education is pushing the educators to experiment, reform and transform the whole education experience. One of the universities in western region has adopted the HOTs as the made for learning and assessing the students. The paper showcase this initiative which turned out to be simple yet forceful in creating an impact and thus transforming the nature of the learning - from Lower Order Thinking skills ( LOTs) to Higher Order Thinking Skills ( HOTs).

Abstract

Pain and inflammation occur as a result of first line defense against injuries and offer the primary signs in the diagnosis of many diseases. A number of medicinal plants available worldwide are helpful in management of pain and inflammation. In the present article the action of leaf extract of Annona squamosa L. in management of pain and inflammation is reported. Wistar rats and mice were used in the study. The ethanolic extract of Annona squamosa L. was examined for centrally acting analgesic action by using the hot plate method and acetic acid-induced writhing method for peripherally acting analgesic action. The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by using Plethysmometer. The study was carried out at a dose of 100mg/kg body weight of the crude extract. The extract exhibited significant increase in reaction time; P<0.001 against acetic acid induced writhing and P<0.01 against hot plate induced nociception as compared to the standard drug Pentazocine. The carageenan induced rat paw edema was significantly decreased by 47.16%.

Abstract

Since last many decades, topic of leadership has been getting considerable attention. The multiple disciplines that have contributed to this subject and large number of models that have been put forth, have made this field full of disparate ideas. One can find multiple competing business models. Multiple researchers have worked to identify effective leaders and leadership styles. But still, there is no widely accepted theory of leadership. Having said that, one can still find some common elements such as - leadership is a social process. Leadership works for attainment of goals. Leadership is about being inspirational, transformational, being good and being compassionate. One of the powerful and recent models that are being talked about in current time is "positive leadership". There have been multiple researches on effect of positive leadership behaviours and benefits. It has been widely accepted that positive leaders bring extraordinary results in organisations. Yet, in spite of these testimonials, there has been very less adaptation of this model in organisations. There can be multiple reasons for the same, but one major hindrance is that organisations have developed their own leadership model and adding more models has more resistance. There has been no research done on implementation of positive leadership models as strategic human resource management (SHRM) and there has been no strategic direction for implementation esp. in Indian context. Organisations would have very high resistance to adopt new and emerging concepts and this paper address possible issues. One of the common and contemporary leadership models that can be found in many organisations are based on competency based leadership. Companies have adopted competency-based models to generate and develop leaders. This paper tries to bring an implementation strategy of positive leadership by merging it in existing competency model. Kim Cameron's model of positive leadership assessment tool has been used as reference point to explore idea of smooth merging of behaviours with competencies so that organisations can reap extraordinary results with positive leadership while keeping their existing SHRM on competency intact. This paper could be used by all individuals and organisations especially by those who believe that positive leadership fosters positive result and who practice competency based leadership style.

Abstract

Globally by the end of the twentieth century, the definition of ‘heritage’ has expanded from built heritage (monuments), historic urban areas, gardens to intangibles including the entire living environment with its cultural traditions and changing lifestyles. With this changing notion of heritage, the concept of conservation of heritage has become less static and more dynamic, taking into account their tangible and intangible dimensions with reference to the culturally sustainable management of heritage resources. The underlying theme of conservation is community development together with the revival of intangible heritage which requires a multi-disciplinary approach which will include the overall environment and involves the local community. The paper investigates through understanding the protection of heritage in the Indian context, and various approaches adopted in few case examples where heritage was at stake or benefitted through various interventions by stakeholders and agencies involved. It will try to underline the need for a holistic and integrated approach to planning in case of protection of and intervention in the heritage areas or precincts. As the present approach for conservation and protection of heritage areas is inappropriate to carry the aspirations of physical and spiritual aspects.

Abstract

Digital natives in our classrooms have different orientation and learning mind-set. The information they need is to be accessible instantly and all the time. Sometimes engaging tools can add more interest and excitement in the whole learning experience. The students' sample of this research work were connected and disseminated through very dynamic tool: Whatsapp. The cross-messaging platform was easily accessible and could be used for diverse kinds of files/links/documents sharing, which benefitted all. This app brings dynamism and more engagement between teacher-student since it is a very familiar tool and has ease of use.
